Hot For Teacher began in 2019 as a quiet newsletter circulated between three former colleagues who had scattered from the same university into classrooms, newsrooms, and design studios. We missed the part of academic life that was almost impossible to find anywhere else: the long, unhurried argument about a single book, the careful disagreement over a poem, the patient look at why a policy was failing in a particular neighborhood. So we started writing those arguments down. The readership grew, the newsletter became a publication, and the publication became a small magazine with a stubborn point of view. We are not a news site and we are not a think tank. We are closer to a quarterly review — except that we publish every week, and we expect our readers to bring their own opinions to the table. > "We write for people who finished school but never stopped being curious about it." — The Editors, 2024 Mission & Values ## Three commitments we hold ourselves to. Editorial work is easy to do badly and hard to do honestly. These are the standards we keep coming back to when a piece is difficult to write or a deadline is tight. ### Substance over volume We publish one or two essays a week, not dozens. Every piece is read by at least two editors and fact-checked before it goes out. If a story does not earn its place, it waits. ### Patience with nuance Education, culture, and modern life are tangled subjects. We resist the urge to flatten them into a single sentence. Our writers are paid to take the long view and sit with complexity. ### Independent by design No paywalled content from sponsors, no advertorial disguised as reporting, no algorithmic chasing.
